nip takes a trip: costa rica

hola my lovely boob troop! so this past April I was lucky enough to spend a week in Costa Rica with my boo thangs Erik, Kuza & Guti. It was my first time there and I had the most magical trip! I have a little travel video that I’ve been working on all the way at the bottom so please check that out- it’ll give you a better look at everything I talk about below! But first, check out some cool photos and some of my favorite moments/places in CR and some travel tips in case you’re thinking of visiting yourself ❤ go ahead and listen to ocean eyes by Billie Eilish and get yo’ read on.

Every single second in CR was out of this world but these are a few of the things we did that really stood out to me. (I’m writing this post 3 months late and these are the things that popped into my head right away, so that must mean they were highlights!)

  • Surfing at Playa Jacó

So we stayed at a resort in Jacó, Costa Rica and it was right on the beach, Playa Jacó! We were lucky enough to be able to watch the sunset every night and workout on the beach every morning. One of the best things, though, was taking surfing lessons right on the beach. We signed up with Tico Surf Lessons and they did a great job teaching us how to get on the surfboard when the wave is coming and everything else we needed to know! It was such a beautiful evening and it felt so freeing to surf some decent sized waves!

  • Watching surf competition at Playa Hermosa

Yes, we were total shaka in Costa Rica. There was a surfing competition at a different beach (a 10-15 minute drive from where we were staying) so we hopped in our car and headed over! It went down at sunset time and that sunset was just ridiculous… Everything was PINK and we watched some really crazy talented surfers competing with the huge waves there. Fun fact: we weren’t even allowed to go in the water at that beach earlier that day because the tides were so strong that people have died just swimming in them! Only professional surfers were allowed in there.

  • Tropical Wings

The best thing about traveling is stumbling across places that you didn’t plan to go to. We were driving up a huge, lush mountain to go to the waterfall and on the way up, we saw a HUGE airplane just in the middle of the forest! On the way back, we stopped to check out what was going on with it and it was a BAR (!!!!!) This old airplane had turned into a bar called Tropical Wings. It was called that because you could order a drink and then walk on to the wings of the airplane where you found yourself up in the middle of the trees in the forest. It was so gorgeous and had the most ridiculous views! The best part was that it was E M P T Y. Erik made a good point by saying that if there was something like that in a major city (aka Miami) it would be so crowded all the time that you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the peace that came with the solitude and the beautiful views.

  • Playa Dominical

Playa Dominical was another beautiful beach but the best part of it was just how much fun we had there watching the sunset. The rocks there were INSANE and we all left with cuts & bruises but we were just having a great time getting beat up by the waves. It felt like one of those timeless moments. We almost lost Guti to the crazy waves there for a second (watch it here) but it all worked out 😉

We ate really well in CR and these are the best restaurants/bars we went to in my opinion that are worth checking out when you visit.

  • The Green Room

Okay let me just tell you that we are THE biggest fans of The Green Room. Kuza (an angel) was the one who discovered this treasure. It’s a restaurant that was just a short walk/drive from our resort and was just the best place we could have found. I promise I’m not saying this because of how long it took me to make the video but you HAVE to check out the video to really see how cute it was and all the delicious food we had! You can see the food here & here. The place was so cute, the food was AMAZING like wow I can’t even describe. They had such creative dishes and many vegan options too! They also made passionfruit mojitos (my favorite) with real passionfruit and I just couldn’t have been happier.

  • Backyard Bar

This is where we went right after watching the surf competition. This bar is right on Playa Hermosa and was super lively! They played great music, there were dogs everywhere, and it was just a great time. Definitely a good place to hang out and get a drink with friends at night. I don’t have photos of this place 😦 But you can see it here in the video.

  • Del Mar Taco Shop

When we were driving up to Playa Dominical, I just googled “food near me” and found Del Mar Taco Shop. It was a very low-key taco stand right by the beach that were known for their fish tacos. I got a taco salad and some of the fish tacos and was FULL as hell. The food was delicious and definitely the perfect food to eat when you’re hanging by the beach.

  • Cafe Mono Congo

Right by Del Mar Taco Shop was Cafe Mono Congo. It’s a coffee shop that’s outdoors and has the cutest aesthetic & vibe ever! They also had really good iced coffee that Kuza and Guti got. Not to mention adorable puppies!

  • Tropical Wings

Tropical wings, besides having great views, had great drinks! Erik and I got mojitos there (the go-to) and they were delicious and refreshing! It’s a really good place to chill and have a drink before going to the beach.

  • Money

Every place takes dollars (I would take out cash and use that) BUT tolls while you’re driving take colones (Costa Rican currency) and when you pay in dollars and get change, they’ll give you colones so just be aware of that. Make sure to pay with as small of bills as possible so you don’t have tons of change left over.

  • Rent a Car

I would 100% recommend renting a car. Costa Rica is a relatively small country and there is SO much to see. We stayed in Jacó which is a beach town on the southernmost part of the country. We rented a car and were able to drive up more north to see a lot more that the country had to offer. Gas is pretty cheap and so is renting a car so it’s definitely worth it if you want to travel around.

Here are the rest of the photos from the trip. Definitely go through them and check out the beauty that we got to experience ❤

Pictures are one thing but this video will give you a whole different feel! I worked really hard to take as much video footage as I could during the trip (I usually like to just snap a picture and put my phone away) so I hope that this video really makes you feel like you’re in CR! I also am so bad at vlogging but I really wanted to try it out on this trip so I did! So this video is a mixture of the usual travel videos I do with music and some vlogging as well. I hope you guys like it and don’t mind my busted ass face (I pretty much never wore makeup because #puravida you know?)
